Holotropic Breathwork

What is HB?

Holotropic Breathwork™ is a powerful natural method of self-exploration, personal transformation and healing. In Holotropic Breathwork™ simple and ancient means such as deeper and faster breathing, evocative music and focused energy release work enable opening to non-ordinary (holotropic) states of consciousness. In these states, the inner healing wisdom of every individual gets activated and brings to one’s awareness important unconscious contents that usually reside deep in our psyche.

How is it done?

The workshops are done in safe setting and supported by highly trained facilitators so that these psychologically important and often emotionally charged contents can be looked at, relieved and healed. The process of Holotropic Breathwork™ consists of three parts: preparation, sessions and integration. The participants in the sessions work in pairs and exchange in the roles of the breather and the sitter. The integration includes (voluntary) mandala drawing and sharing of the most important parts of one’s experience with other participants.

Why would I participate?

Holotropic Breathwork™ can lead to greater self-understanding and feeling of joy and serenity in everyday life, it can help liberating emotional and creative expression, reduce anxiety, stress and symptoms of depression and result in healing of physical and emotional trauma and psychosomatic problems,. People who breathe regularly also report that it helped them to transcend the feeling of internal fragmentation and isolation and enabled them to connect to deeper feeling of meaning and purpose in their lives.

What is the origin of HB?

Developed by psychiatrist Dr. Stanislav Grof and Christina Grof it was named holotropic to signify the ability to move toward wholeness (from the Greek holos – whole trepein – moving toward), residing in the psyche of every human being. It is based on more than 50 years of observations and clinical research by Dr. Stanislav Grof that reflect great transformative and healing potential of non-ordinary (holotropic) states of consciousness.

The method of Holotropic Breathwork™ integrates insights from modern consciousness research, perennial philosophy, transpersonal psychology, modern psychedelic research and anthropology to different spiritual practices, shamanism and mystical traditions of the world.
